Boyles Wins Scripps Howard Visiting Professorship in Social Media

Assistant Professor Jan Lauren Boyles will receive one of the six grants being awarded for participation in the 2016-17 Scripps Howard Foundation Visiting Professors in Social Media Program.

The grant will enable her to visit a major daily newspaper for a two-week externship.

Details of the visit will be released later in the week by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

“I am absolutely thrilled to accept this award,” Boyles stated upon learning the news late Wednesday.

Michael Bugeja, Greenlee School director, noted that Scripps externships are highly coveted and competition nationwide is keen for social media slots. “It is gratifying to know that Jan, along with other Greenlee faculty members, are making inroads into the future of our industry.”

Upon completion of her externship, Boyles will bring to the classroom the latest techniques in digital content creation and also share her own considerable expertise in data journalism.

Boyles, a 2014 ISU presidential hire in big data, previously worked at the Pew Research Center, where she served as Research Associate for the Journalism Project and contributor to the Internet & American Life Project. A former Google Journalism Fellow, she also currently serves as research co-chair for AEJMC’s Newspaper & Online News Division.
