Group of three students looking at coffee beans in Costa Rica

Experience international travel blogging

Enhance your writing skills while you practice travel blogging in Costa Rica. You’ll visit farms and interact with farmers who produce coffee, highland fruits, organic vegetables, sugarcane, pineapple and spices. You’ll also have a chance to explore national parks, mountains and beaches.

This longstanding study abroad trip, Soils, Crops and Natural Resources of Costa Rica, will open your eyes to travel blogging, with a specific focus on agritourism and farm-to-table tourism in Costa Rica. The program is jointly administered with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Teaching Professor Erin Wilgenbusch will lead the Greenlee component.

You’ll learn about historical and cultural aspects of Costa Rica. Tours include conversations with farmers who grow and process coffee, highland fruits, organic vegetables, sugar cane, pineapple, mango, bamboo and spices. You will also explore and blog about the communities you visit during your 10-day tour. Downtime includes spending a day hiking in a national park that features volcanoes and waterfalls, and enjoying a day at the beach.

The country

Costa Rica has tremendous biodiversity and a stunning range of environments packed into a small footprint. This trip starts in Liberia in the northwest and then moves through areas of humid forests, mountain towns, dry areas requiring irrigation, coastal climates and more before returning to Liberia.

Housing and meals

Housing is in hotels and other tourist-class lodging, and all meals are included.

Courses

Greenlee students will take JLMC 3900. Prior to spring break, all students will meet weekly on campus for pre-departure class sessions.
