Talk is Cheap, Free Speech Isn’t. Expert training for First Amendment Champions

Friday, April 13, 2018, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Iowa State University

AUDIENCE High school, college and university media advisers, high school teachers, college and university faculty and administrators, librarians, media professionals, community activists. SUMMARY This workshop is designed to train campus and community leaders as First Amendment activists. Upon completion, participants will be able to return to their schools and communities equipped with ideas to create their own exciting and creative events to celebrate the First Amendment and educate others about its five freedoms. INSTRUCTORS Gene Policinski, president and chief operating officer of the Newseum Institute; Dr. Andrea Frantz, associate professor of digital media at Buena Vista University and president of the Society of Collegiate Journalists; Mark Witherspoon, editorial adviser to the Iowa State Daily; Julie Roosa, J.D., First Amendment Specialist and adjunct assistant professor, Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, Iowa State University. COST Free. REGISTRATION Registration includes continental breakfast, luncheon and refreshments. 9:15-10 a.m. What’s Up First? The state of the First Amendment.

10-11 a.m. History Matters. The First Amendment, then and now.

11 a.m.-noon Learning our lesson. Teaching the First Amendment, in class and out.

noon-1 p.m. Vittles and VIPs. Lunch with the 2018 Greenlee/Kappa Tau Alpha Diversity & Inclusion Awards.

1-2 p.m. What Would You Do? Walkouts, kneeling, e-censoring and more.

2-3 p.m. Up First. Small Group Action Planning.

3-4 p.m. Free to Go. Small group reports and closing remarks.
