Where passion meets profession.

A career in journalism and mass communication, advertising, sports media and communication or public relations offers dynamic and impactful ways to entertain, shape public perception and influence societal narratives. Whether you’re drawn to investigative journalism, creative advertising campaigns, strategic public relations, sports media or mass communication through various media platforms, your degree will provide diverse opportunities to engage with audiences, craft compelling messages and drive meaningful conversations.

At Greenlee, we teach practical, transferable skills through a multitude of work experiences, including a required internship, the People Inc. Apprentice Program, capstone projects, practicums, classroom projects and more. You’ll be well-prepared to enter a fast-paced and ever-evolving industry, where your work can make a significant difference in how information is shared and consumed. The opportunities are endless.

Internships

As a Greenlee major, you’ll be required to complete a 300-hour professional internship

as part of your coursework. This requirement sets Iowa State apart from other colleges and universities, giving you an edge when seeking future jobs.

You won’t be alone in your internship journey. Greenlee School’s dedicated internship coordinator will help you find an opportunity that fits you, whether that’s an in-person, remote or hybrid position. And you can work at any company you choose. But you don’t have to stop there. Build an expanded portfolio of work by securing an additional internship with the help of your academic advisor or LAS Career Services.

Career planning and preparation

When it’s time for you to begin your career search, we offer many resources to assist you. LAS Career Services and their network host thousands of employers at on-campus career fairs each year, and they can connect you with potential employers and professional schools. LAS Career Services staff can also help you perfect your resume or cover letter, conduct mock interviews, or negotiate a job offer.

Connect with career professionals at Greenlee School’s “Discovery Days,” where you can casually network with potential employers on campus in a small, relaxed setting. Greenlee also hosts “Interview Days” with specific employers who are seeking journalism and communication graduates. Faculty members are a great resource for finding future employment opportunities, too.
