Football, Culture, and History

This 10 day program in August 2025 will focus on media coverage of the Iowa State – Kansas State football game in Dublin, Ireland. Students will also explore Irish history, culture, sports and media through experiences in the heart of Dublin with additional excursions to Galway and Inishmore.

Ireland

The media coverage of the Iowa State vs. Kansas State football game in Dublin, Ireland, will be the primary focus of this ten-day program. Students will team up and create compelling stories and social media content about the game and produce stories from the experiences of athletes, band members, and fans!

What will you accomplish/learn?

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  •  Understand Irish history and culture.
  •  Demonstrate outstanding storytelling capabilities in a variety of formats – writing, video and audio, social media, etc.
  •  Work as a team to cover multiple aspects of a significant event.

The country

Located on the westernmost tip of Europe is the island nation of Ireland. It is the second-largest island in the continent.

Ireland is a country of storytellers. The tradition originated with the Celtic bards, who would write down and tell the history of their nation. Ireland is home to many well-known authors, including multiple Nobel Prize winners.

Housing and meals

Housing is in hotels and other tourist-class lodging, and all meals are included.

Courses

Greenlee students will take JLMC 3900. Before departure, all students will meet weekly on campus for pre-departure class sessions.

Program prerequisites

  • Complete the Study Abroad application, including three references and a summary of international experiences.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Completion of or enrollment in JLMC 2010. Media experience preferred.
  • Ability to walk 6-7 miles per day. Ability to carry filming equipment.
