Spring Break in Costa Rica
Experience international travel blogging
Practice travel blogging while experiencing farms, national parks, mountains and beaches. Stops will include interactions with many farmers who produce coffee, highland fruits, organic vegetables, sugarcane, pineapple, and spices.
Experience travel blogging, with a specific focus on agritourism and farm-to-table tourism in Costa Rica, during this longstanding program during spring break 2025 – Soils, Crops and Natural Resources of Costa Rica – jointly administered with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Teaching Professor Erin Wilgenbusch will lead your Greenlee component.
Learn about historical and cultural aspects of Costa Rica. Tours will include conversations with many farmers who have years of experience with this ISU course and who grow and process coffee, highland fruits, organic vegetables, sugar cane, pineapple, mango, bamboo and spices. You will also explore and blog about the communities you visit during your 10-day tour, and the entire group will spend one day in a national park with volcanoes and waterfalls and another at the beach.
The country
Costa Rica has tremendous biodiversity and a stunning range of environments packed into a small footprint. This trip starts in Liberia in the northwest and then moves through areas of humid forest, mountain towns, dry areas requiring irrigation, coastal climates and more before returning to Liberia.
Housing and meals
Housing is in hotels and other tourist-class lodging, and all meals are included.
Courses
Greenlee students will take JLMC 3900. Their counterparts in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will take AGRON/GLOBE 4960. Before departure in March, all students will meet weekly on campus for pre-departure class sessions.
