The White House Historical Association, in partnership with Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, have awarded Cleo Westin with the Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship in Journalism.
Even before her first day of classes at Iowa State, Mia Kawamitsu (’24 journalism and mass communication, international studies) sought out leads to write a future story. Her story, that is. The summer before her freshman year of college, she clicked through Iowa State’s website listings of over 800 student organizations and selected the ones she wanted to pursue.
For my 499A internship, I had the privilege of working with the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, also known as Discover Ames. My experience with this nonprofit organization has been nothing short of remarkable, providing me with valuable insights, connections and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.
Students in the Greenlee School produced their first episode of the brand-new show “EverGreenlee News” Nov. 7. All semester, students in assistant teaching professor Tony Moton’s Broadcast Media Production course learned and practiced with the production equipment in the Student Innovation Center’s digital media studio in preparation for creating the TV news show.
This summer I had an incredible opportunity to dive into the world of social media and copywriting through my content internship with Deksia. Deksia is an advertising agency with locations across several states, including Iowa. As a content intern, I got to learn and grow my skills in social media planning and management, content writing, and project collaboration across several teams.

This summer, I was a social media intern for Parks Marina Inc. Parks Marina is a prominent marina in the tourist town of Okoboji, Iowa, that also owns several restaurants, boutiques and businesses in the area. I got the opportunity to do marketing work for all of them.
I just finished my summer internship and am ready to share my experiences! I wanted to be close to my hometown and applied for a social media marketing internship with the Iowa 80 Group in Walcott, Iowa. The internship was for their website Iowa80.com, which has all the main social media platforms to direct traffic to their website.
