Alumna Kim Guthrie to present career and leadership advice during 2018 Futures Forum

Kim Guthrie, President of Cox Media Group, will discuss the future of digital media at the Greenlee School’s 2018 Futures Forum on Thursday, Oct. 4. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Campanile Room. Refreshments will be available at 3:30 p.m.

In her presentation, “From the Iowa Cornfield to the New York Boardroom,” the Davenport, Iowa, native will advise students on how to speak up, be noticed, get promoted and become successful leaders. She will also discuss the evolving landscape of digital media and how to best navigate these changes.

Guthrie will draw on her own experience as a 1984 graduate of the Greenlee School, her early career in broadcast journalism and her path to her current senior leadership role at Cox Media Group (CMG), an integrated broadcasting, publishing and digital media subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, Inc.

As President of CMG, Guthrie oversees content, sales and operations for 14 broadcast television stations, more than 60 radio stations, two daily newspapers and more than 100 digital sites and services. CMG also operates the National Advertising Platform businesses of CoxReps, Gamut and Videa.

Previously, Guthrie was Executive Vice President of National Ad Platforms and President of CoxReps, where she also had oversight of Gamut and Videa. Prior to that role, she was Executive VP of Radio, where she was responsible for all programming, operations and sales for CMG’s radio division.

Under her leadership, CMG has won multiple honors for programming excellence and outstanding community service, including several American Advertising Federation awards, Crystal awards, Edward R. Murrow awards, Emmy awards, Gracie awards, Investigative Reporters and Editors awards, Marconi awards, New York Air awards, Online News Association awards, Scripps Howard awards, Society of Professional Journalism awards and Telly awards.

Prior to joining CMG in 1998 as the VP/General Manager for its Long Island, New York cluster of radio stations, Guthrie worked in general sales manager roles at Hubbard Broadcasting, Heritage Media and All Pro Broadcasting.

Guthrie has received multiple honors for her work, including Radio Ink Magazine’s “Most Powerful People in Radio” and “Most Influential Women in Radio” awards. She serves on the executive board of directors for the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB).

Guthrie started her career as a journalist, having spent several years as a television news reporter and anchor.

During her time as a journalism student at Iowa State University, Guthrie anchored for WOI-TV and was an ambassador for the university’s Student Alumni Association. She currently serves as a board member on the Greenlee School’s advisory council.
