Nominate Greenlee School alumni for the Greenlee Professional Achievement Award and the Greenlee Young Alumni Award by Dec. 1, 2019.
Kim Guthrie (’84 journalism), president of Cox Media Group, has been named the recipient of the 2019 James W. Schwartz Award. The annual award recognizes distinguished service to journalism and communication and is the highest honor conferred by Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Iowa State University Alumni Association presented awards to Dave Kurns, the late Henry Ong, Art Slusark and Dan Winters during Homecoming Week. Bill Tubbs received the school’s Schwartz Award and Jen Sorenson was recognized by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Joel Geske, associate professor in advertising, is the first recipient of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication’s Allen Essman Faculty Fellowship made possible by Iowa State alumna, Denise Essman (marketing, 1973). The inaugural Faculty Fellowship rewards an advertising professor who has demonstrated excellence in their profession.
Kim Guthrie, President of Cox Media Group and Iowa State University alumna in journalism, will present the Greenlee School’s 2018 Futures Forum, “From the Iowa Cornfield to the New York Boardroom,” Oct. 4. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Campanile Room. Refreshments will be available at 3:30 p.m.
Sara Wyant, president and founder of Agri-Pulse Communications Inc., the nation’s largest communications firm focused on agricultural and rural policy issues, will present the 2018 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture Oct. 2 at Iowa State University. Wyant earned a degree in journalism and mass communications from Iowa State in 1980.
William F. “Bill” Tubbs, co-owner and co-publisher of the Eldridge North Scott Press and Wilton-Durant Advocate News and longtime supporter of journalism education, will receive the Greenlee School’s 2018 James W. Schwartz Award. The annual award recognizes distinguished service to journalism and communication.
Kelsey Kremer (’13 journalism) and Maia Zewert (’15 journalism) have been named 2018 Iowa STATEment Makers by the the Iowa State University Alumni Association. Read more about them and the other 19 alumni who’ve been honored this year.
The 2003 Greenlee graduate will present “Talk Is Cheap, Free Speech Isn’t: Why the First Amendment Is Worth It” at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building.
