Newell reports teaching updates, faculty developmental leave

CATEGORIES: Archive

Associate Professor [Jay Newell](/directory/jay-newell/) reports the following:

  • The Ad Principles class continues its Wednesday Wake Up Call program to connect current students to recently-graduated professionals. In the past months students have interacted with Lauren Garin (10 Thousand Design, MSP), Hannah Henslin (Target, MSP), Donavon Davenport (Reach Entertainment, LA) and Megan Schuller (Haworth Marketing + Media, MSP).

  • The Computational Communication: Ad Creative has two clients on board this semester. The ISU hockey team has challenged the class to develop a new app to help increase attendance, and digital ad firm iCrossing has begun work with the students on a digital/bricks&mortar retailing concept. In late March I presented the outcomes of the Computational Communication: Ad Creative class to a pre-conference session on the transition to digital advertising at the American Academy of Advertising.

  • This fall I will be on faculty development leave, working with advertising agencies helping identify the data-driven skill sets needed by a new generation of ad creatives and executives. I will be a research fellow at Southern Methodist University’s Temerlin Advertising Institute in Dallas.
